Tips That Can Make Your Piano Practice a Success

Learn and Master PianoWhether you are learning to play the piano or any other skill that requires hours of practice, odds are you know full well that you need to keep up with your practice in order to strengthen the skill you are trying so hard to obtain. While you could always resort to fitting in your piano practice when you have the time, you really need to utilise a piano practice routine that will make sure you always have the time in your day to practice the piano no matter what life may throw at you.

In order to be successful, you need to set aside a particular time on your schedule each and every day for your piano practice routine. You may also want to break your piano practice into specific elements, such as warm-up exercises, as well as variable ones that can chance as your skills improve. Just remember that performing does not actually count as practice. While playing gigs or performing in Church or even for your personal enjoyment is considered part of your musical development, it should not be used as an excuse to replace your pre-scheduled piano practice routine.

While you may be able to stick with your piano practice routine 99% of the time, there will be times where life or other outside influences may prevent you from being able to practice the piano when you normally do. Although some distractions may only last a matter of hours or even a day, there may be other times that you will not be able to follow a normal piano practice routine for weeks if not months at a time. While you may be feeling like all may be lost, that you cannot possibly meet your piano playing goals simply because an equally important project got in the way, you may find yourself considering giving up on your goals. But should you? Here are some simple tips that can help you stick with your piano practice no matter how hectic life and your schedule may get.

First, utilise the free time that is given you to practice the piano. While you may currently have two or maybe even three hours allocated in your schedule for piano practice two to three times a week, there may be times when that amount of time may not even be available. While life may not provide you with all the time you may need, it will still provide you with some amount of free time that can be used for piano practice if you choose to use it to your advantage. Since the amount of time you have been given is much less than you are used to, you will want to use it to practice something that is not currently in your arsenal. It could be a scale, a lick, a section of a tune, a set of chord voicings, or even a transcribed solo, anything that gets you playing during the time you have been allotted. Just make sure the item you choose to practice is small. This way you have a great chance of getting a handle on the task in a short amount of time, allowing you to move onto something else the next time you have a chance to practice the piano.

Lastly, take a “What can improve my musicianship” approach to your practice time. While you may not have been given the amount of time you would normally use for your piano practice, you will still want to make sure you use that time to your advantage no matter how small. If you approach your piano practice with a goal of learning something new, no matter how small, in that short period of time, you will end up being successful with your piano practice. Its best to attack small tasks when you are short on time, that way you increase your chance of increasing your piano playing skills even when you are strapped for time.

These are just a few simple tips that can help you achieve piano practice success even when you are short on time. Make sure to utilise any free time that is given to you as piano practice time, and take a “What can improve my skills” approach to this time, and you are sure to achieve piano practicing success no matter what challenges life may throw at you.
